Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
