Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
