The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
